Firearms and Suppressors Together on One e4473: What Dealers Need To Know

November 3, 2026 · Bravo Store Systems

Firearms and suppressors. Together on one e4473. e4473 product update.

More Item Types on the Same e4473

Bravo already supported suppressors. The expanded e4473 workflow now lets you include suppressors, any other weapons (AOWs), short-barreled rifles (SBRs), and short-barreled shotguns (SBSs) alongside other firearms on the same e4473.

Already using Bravo? Call (725) 525-3535 and ask about the expanded e4473 workflow. Our team can discuss your store's workflow and next steps. See the What's New at Bravo update for the product announcement.

What Changed At The Federal Level

In its October 9, 2026 open letter, ATF announced nationwide non-enforcement of specified NFA making, transfer-approval, and registration requirements for suppressors and certain other $0-tax items. The policy followed a district court ruling and Congress's reduction of the making and transfer taxes for those items to $0.

The distinction matters: this is an enforcement-policy change, not a repeal of every law governing suppressors. ATF continues to accept voluntary NFA filings. Machine guns and destructive devices remain subject to the NFA's full requirements and applicable $200 tax.

What Still Applies At Your Counter

  • Form 4473 and background checks: ATF's industry guidance says dealers must obtain Form 4473 and, unless otherwise exempt, conduct a NICS check before a transfer to an unlicensed person.
  • Transaction records: Keep the required acquisition and disposition records. Suppressors remain firearms under the Gun Control Act.
  • State and local laws: Federal non-enforcement does not override state restrictions. Some states tie lawful possession to federal registration. Confirm the rules for your store and buyer before transferring an item.
  • Dealer eligibility and taxes: Applicable federal licensing and special occupational tax obligations remain for those engaged in the business.
  • Buyer and residency restrictions: Prohibited-person rules and other Gun Control Act restrictions still apply. ATF notes that, with limited exceptions, these items may be transferred to unlicensed residents of the dealer's state only.

Do Not Promise Every Customer A Same-Day Transfer

Removing a federal NFA approval step does not guarantee an immediate sale. Background-check outcomes, state waiting periods, registration requirements, and other restrictions can still affect whether and when a transfer is lawful. Train staff to explain the distinction rather than advertise a universal “walk out today” promise.

ATF also warns that its enforcement policy could change and that unregistered items are not automatically grandfathered if enforcement resumes. Review ATF's current FAQs, including the Future Risk section, and seek qualified legal advice for jurisdiction-specific decisions.

A Practical Checklist For Your Team

  1. Confirm your store's licensing, SOT status, and applicable state/local restrictions.
  2. Review the current ATF guidance with the staff who handle suppressor transactions.
  3. Contact Bravo about the updated e4473 suppressor workflow before changing your store's process.
  4. Keep transaction records and any voluntary NFA documentation organized.
  5. Update customer-facing explanations without promising automatic approval or same-day delivery.
